Itinerary

Day 1: Wednesday 2nd November
Arrival, Cookery Class and Welcome Dinner
Meet at Milan Linate airport at 12.25 (to coincide with the British Airways flight from London – see Travel tab). Group transfer by coach to Alba (1 ½ hours) and check in to Hotel Calissano, our base for the next 4 nights (see Accommodation details)

Alba is a charming town in the province of Cuneo and is a foodies delight! Its narrow streets are lined with all manner of gastronomic shops, and of course it’s THE centre for truffles. Alba is considered the capital of the UNESCO Heritage area of the Langhe Hills, and is famous for its white truffle, peach and wine production.

There will be time to freshen up and then mid-afternoon head straight out to a local winery for a ‘hands-on’ cookery class, followed by a Gourmet Welcome Dinner with a selection of wines from the region including Barolo DOCG. Late evening return to hotel

Day 2: Thursday 3rd November
Full Day Barolo & Barbaresco
This morning after breakfast drive through the famous vineyards of Barolo, and to the village of the same name. Visit a family winery for a tour and tasting of different single ‘Cru’ Barolo wines. Continue to another family winery for lunch in their restaurant with local regional specialities accompanied by some of their wines. This afternoon visit a prestigious winery in Barbaresco to contrast the style of Nebbiolos made in this DOCG. Return to our hotel in Alba. Free evening.

Day 3: Friday 4th November
Truffle Hunting and Monferrato
This morning it’s the Truffle Hunt! Meet the truffle hunter with his trusty truffle hound in private woods, hoping that he (the dog!) will sniff out some of the ‘white gold’. Afterwards enjoy a home-cooked lunch at the truffle hunter’s house which will include fresh pasta with shaved white truffles, and a selection of wines from Monferrato. Afternoon visit to a well-known winery in Asti with tasting of several wines including the unusual ’Nizza’ DOCG. Late afternoon return to our hotel. Free evening.

Day 4: Saturday 5th November
Roero and Monferrato
For early risers there is a Saturday Market in Alba, otherwise... this morning we'll visit a winery in Roero for a tour and tasting, followed by lunch in their gastronomic restaurant, set in a country-house hotel overlooking the rolling hills and vineyards. This afternoon a tour and tasting at a prestigious, historic winery in the hills between Asti and Alba, who are best known for their stunning Barberas. Return to Alba late afternoon and this evening you will be able to visit the Truffle Fair in Alba – self-guided, but maps and information will be provided.

Day 5: Sunday 6th November
Gavi, Transfer back to Milan Linate and Farewell

After breakfast, check-out and drive to Gavi. This is white wine country based on the local Cortese grapes, so will be a welcome contrast to the ‘big’ reds of the rest of the tour. Visit our final winery for a tour and tasting followed by lunch. Mid-afternoon depart and drive back to Milan Linate airport (1 ½ hours) arriving by 5 pm in time for British Airways 18.55 flight to London Heathrow.

END OF TOUR

The itinerary has been organised by Simon and Julia Barnaby of Piedmont Food & Wine Tours. They have lived and worked in Italy for over 15 years and during this time have got to personally know many of the growers and producers who make the fantastic wines and foods in the Piedmont region. Please note that some winery visits are subject to confirmation and we may need to change the order of visits.
